What counts as an AI artist
There is no official definition. This page uses the words that streaming services and the music industry now use, and each row below describes an act in its source’s own terms.
- AI persona. The name, face and story are presented as a person but are generated. Spotify’s AI Persona badge, which Spotify said it would show from mid-September 2026, marks this identity, not how the music was made (Spotify, 11 Aug 2026).
- AI-generated. AI made the lead vocal, a key instrumental part or the whole track, even when a person wrote the lyrics. This is one of two labels that IFPI, RIAA, the Recording Academy and other music bodies proposed on 10 Jul 2026 (IFPI, 10 Jul 2026).
- AI-assisted. People performed the lead vocal and the primary instruments, and AI was used for some expressive elements. That is the second label (IFPI, 10 Jul 2026).
A hidden or animated act is not automatically AI: a Berklee songwriting professor points to Gorillaz, Daft Punk and the virtual singer Hatsune Miku, none of which was produced by AI (Berklee, 22 Jul 2025). And an AI act is rarely a machine on its own: Billboard named a credited songwriter or creator for most of the AI acts in its 2025 chart count (Billboard, 4 Nov 2025).
The list: AI artists and who is behind them
Each row was checked on its source on 5 Oct 2026: chart companies, streaming services, industry bodies, the artists’ own statements and named news reports. A person or company is named only where the source names them. For every chart week and position song by song, see AI songs on the charts.
| Artist | What it is and how AI is used | Who is behind it | What it reached, and when | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Breaking Rust | Country act that Billboard describes as AI-powered | The songs are credited to songwriter Aubierre Rivaldo Taylor, who did not answer Billboard. | Solomon Ray | Southern soul gospel singer created with AI. Its creator says he starts from his own hook and lyrics, uses ChatGPT to structure the song, generates versions in Suno and then edits them like a producer | Christopher Jermaine Townsend, a Mississippi musician who also records as Topher and talks openly about the project | “Find Your Rest”: No. 18 on Hot Gospel Songs and No. 2 on Gospel Digital Song Sales (charts dated 15 Nov 2025) | WLBT, 3 Dec 2025; Billboard, 4 Nov 2025 |
| The Velvet Sundown | Rock band with a 1970s sound whose images are AI-generated. On 3 Jul 2025 it described itself as “a synthetic music project guided by human creative direction”, composed, voiced and visualised with the support of AI | Not named. A person using the name Andrew Frelon posed as its spokesperson in late June 2025, then explained it was a hoax | More than 1.4 million monthly Spotify listeners and three albums between June and mid-July 2025 | Berklee, 22 Jul 2025 |
| Sienna Rose | Anonymous soul singer. Deezer told the BBC that many of her albums and songs are detected and flagged as AI. At least 45 tracks were uploaded between 28 Sep and 5 Dec 2025, with no gigs, videos or social media | No person named. Several songs appear to be credited to the US label Broke, which did not answer the BBC, and a label called Nostalgic Records lists her on its website | Three songs in Spotify’s Viral 50 and almost 3 million monthly Spotify listeners (January 2026) | BBC, 17 Jan 2026 |

| Chill77, Unjaps and Mikeeysmind, “Papaoutai (Afro Soul)” | An AI-made afro-soul version of Stromae’s 2013 song “Papaoutai”, with the lyrics and melody unchanged. Luminate counts it as AI-assisted | Credited to Mikeeysmind (Mikael Daghighi) and Chill77 and released by the Swedish label Unjaps AB, which specialises in AI-made versions of hits. Stromae approved it, and Spotify lists the copyright as Unjaps AB and Mosaert, Stromae’s label | No. 68 on the UK Official Singles Chart (29 Jan 2026); 210.7 million streams worldwide in the first half of 2026, the highest-ranking AI-assisted song in Luminate’s report; sent to French and Belgian radio by Universal Music in February 2026 | Official Charts, Papaoutai; Luminate, 15 Jul 2026; Moustique, 18 Feb 2026; Billboard, 15 Jul 2026 |

How this list is checked. We keep each source’s own description of how AI was used and leave out guesses about who runs an anonymous act, however widely they circulate. If you are named here and something is wrong, tell us through the contact page and we will check it against the source. Updated 6 Oct 2026: first version, 16 acts.
AI country singers: Breaking Rust and Cain Walker
Two AI acts held three of the top ten places on Billboard’s Country Digital Song Sales chart dated 15 Nov 2025: Breaking Rust’s “Walk My Walk” at No. 1, and Cain Walker’s “Don’t Tread on Me” and “Ain’t My Problem” at No. 3 and No. 9 (Billboard, 13 Nov 2025).
- Sales, not reach. Measured in equivalent album units, which combine streams and sales, Breaking Rust ranked No. 228 among country artists in the week to 6 Nov 2025 and Cain Walker No. 359 (Billboard, 14 Nov 2025).
- Not on country radio. Country stations had not added either act by mid-November 2025; a radio consultant told Billboard that listeners react badly to the idea of AI voices (Billboard, 13 Nov 2025).
- Streams in 2026. Breaking Rust’s “Livin’ on Borrowed Time” was the most streamed AI song in the US in the first half of 2026, with 19 million on-demand audio streams (Billboard, 15 Jul 2026).
For the week-by-week chart runs of these songs, see AI songs on the charts.
Other AI acts that charted or made the news
- Smaller Billboard chart entries, 2025. ChildPets Galore, Unbound Music, Enlly Blue, Juno Skye, World Hive and JoshM each reached a Billboard genre or Emerging Artists chart on about 1,000 downloads in a week; Billboard lists a credited songwriter for four of them (Billboard, 4 Nov 2025).
- Voice imitations. Trump The Don, a 2023 parody by the rapper Hi-Rez, used AI filtering to sound like Donald Trump and reached No. 5 on Rap Digital Song Sales; BOI WHAT’s “PLAN Z” used the same kind of tool to imitate the cartoon character Plankton (Billboard, 4 Nov 2025). “Heart on My Sleeve”, posted by an anonymous creator called Ghostwriter, used AI vocals imitating Drake and The Weeknd and was pulled from streaming services on 17 Apr 2023 (The FADER, 18 Apr 2023).
- AI artists built by companies. Producer Timbaland launched the company Stage Zero in June 2025; its first act is TaTa, an AI pop artist made with Suno (Billboard, 5 Jun 2025). Hallwood Media signed the Suno creator imoliver in July 2025, the first signing of a Suno creator to a record label, and names China Styles, Bleeding Verse, Drew Meadows, Lone Star Lyric House and David Sven among its other AI artists (Billboard, 16 Sep 2025; Billboard, 11 Dec 2025).
How to tell if an artist is AI
No single sign proves it, and your ears are the weakest test. Check these, in this order:
- Labels on the profile and the track. On Spotify, look for the AI Persona badge and for AI credits on the song; a “Verified by Spotify” mark means Spotify considers the artist a real person presenting themselves authentically (Spotify, 11 Aug 2026). On Deezer, look for the AI-generated content tag, which is set on the whole album (Deezer, 21 Jul 2026).
- The credits. A credited songwriter is a lead you can follow: Billboard found one for most AI acts on its charts (Billboard, 4 Nov 2025).
- What the creators say. The people behind Xania Monet, Solomon Ray, Vinih Pray, HAVEN. and Eddie Dalton have all explained their use of AI to reporters (Billboard, 16 Sep 2025; WLBT, 3 Dec 2025; Billboard, 3 Jun 2025; Billboard, 20 Nov 2025; Newsweek, 7 Apr 2026).
- Release pace and public life. Sienna Rose uploaded at least 45 tracks in about ten weeks and has played no gigs (BBC, 17 Jan 2026); The Velvet Sundown released three albums between June and mid-July 2025 (Berklee, 22 Jul 2025). These are signals, not proof.
- Detection tools, with care. Billboard checks artist pages, runs songs through Deezer’s detection tool and contacts the creators (Billboard, 13 Nov 2025). Online detectors can disagree: RTBF tested one song on five of them and got four AI verdicts and one “probably human” (RTBF, 22 Apr 2026).
Our guide how to tell if a song is AI-generated walks through these checks for a single track.
How Spotify, Deezer and the industry label AI artists
- Spotify AI Persona badge. Announced on 11 Aug 2026, to appear from mid-September in the profile banner, the About section, Search and track rows. Artists can declare it themselves; Spotify also reviews profiles whose name and images look like a photorealistic AI identity, starting with those above an audience threshold, and the artist can then disclose or appeal. Badged profiles are left out of editorial and algorithmic recommendations unless you follow them (Spotify, 11 Aug 2026). Details in Spotify’s AI Persona badge, explained.
- Spotify AI credits. Track credits that say how AI was used; Spotify says tens of thousands are submitted every day (Spotify, 11 Aug 2026). Josh Fawaz’s “Like a Prayer” is one example: it credits generative AI vocals and AI drums (ABC News, 17 Jul 2026).
- Deezer. Its detection tool tags albums it finds to be AI-generated and keeps them out of algorithmic recommendations and editorial playlists. Deezer says the tool is 99.8% accurate (Deezer, 21 Jul 2026).
- Industry track labels. On 10 Jul 2026, IFPI, RIAA, A2IM, WIN, IMPALA, the Recording Academy, SAG-AFTRA and the Human Artistry Campaign proposed two voluntary labels for streaming services, “AI-Generated” and “AI-Assisted”, as defined at the top of this page (IFPI, 10 Jul 2026).
If you release music made with AI, say so in the credits and do not present a generated identity as a real person. Lyro has no voice cloning, and its rules do not allow imitating a real person’s voice or naming a real artist as a style (acceptable use); every download of audio generated on Lyro carries an AI-generated tag. Starting from your own lyrics (lyrics to song) or your own voice (a beat for your vocal) keeps your own work in the track. Our platform policy tracker covers what Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube and TikTok require.
Chart rules for AI artists in 2026
Since 30 Jul 2026, IFPI’s principles say a recording made with generative AI should stay off an official chart where there is reason to believe it fails any of six tests: the AI service is authorised and lawful, the recording is substantially human made, there is no manipulation, it respects copyright and personality rights, it does not breach the AI service’s terms, and its AI use is signalled to listeners (IFPI, 30 Jul 2026). National charts have since adopted these or similar rules:
| Chart | Rule for recordings made with AI | Since | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Charts run by IFPI in Latin America (including Brazil’s Pro-Música and Mexico’s AMPROFON charts), the Middle East and North Africa, Southeast Asia and South Africa | IFPI’s six tests | 30 Jul 2026 | IFPI, 30 Jul 2026 |
| Germany, Offizielle Deutsche Charts | Substantially human made, AI only as a supporting tool, its use disclosed, and only authorised AI services | 30 Jul 2026 | BVMI, 30 Jul 2026 |
| Italy, Top of the Music by FIMI/NIQ | IFPI’s six tests | 30 Jul 2026 | FIMI, 30 Jul 2026 |
| Australia, ARIA Charts | An AI lead vocal or a key instrumental part makes a track ineligible; AI backing vocals, mastering or stem separation do not | Chart dated 31 Aug 2026 | ARIA FAQ |
| France, SNEP charts and certifications | Substantial human input, AI use made clear to the public, and an authorised AI service | May 2026, announced 8 Sep 2026 | SNEP, 8 Sep 2026; Le Figaro, 8 Sep 2026 |
| Spain, PROMUSICAE and AGEDI charts | IFPI’s six tests, formally adopted | 24 Sep 2026 | PROMUSICAE and AGEDI, 24 Sep 2026 |
| Sweden, Sverigetopplistan | Songs that are mainly AI-generated are excluded | January 2026 | Music Business Worldwide, 19 Jan 2026 |
Radio has rules too: iHeartRadio’s “Guaranteed Human” pledge of November 2025 rules out AI music with synthetic singers presented as human (Billboard, 11 Dec 2025), and three Italian stations dropped Gisèle’s song (Il Fatto Quotidiano, 13 Aug 2026). In the US, Billboard said on 25 Aug 2026 that it will identify songs that use AI on its charts and in its coverage (Billboard, 25 Aug 2026). So far the rules have kept Jacub off Sweden’s chart, Gisèle off Italy’s, and Willylancien and the Gims and Rven duet off France’s. For each song that did reach a chart, see AI songs on the charts.
Questions
Who is Xania Monet, and who created her?
Xania Monet is an AI R&B and gospel artist created by Telisha “Nikki” Jones, a poet and songwriter from Mississippi who writes about 90% of the lyrics and makes the recordings with Suno. Hallwood Media signed the project in September 2025 after bidding reached $3 million, and in November 2025 it became the first known AI artist on a Billboard radio chart (Billboard, 16 Sep 2025; Billboard, 4 Nov 2025).
Is Breaking Rust a real band?
Billboard describes Breaking Rust as an AI-powered country act, and no performers have been named in the sources we read. Its songs are credited to songwriter Aubierre Rivaldo Taylor, who did not answer Billboard. “Walk My Walk” spent two weeks at No. 1 on Country Digital Song Sales in November 2025 (Billboard, 13 Nov 2025; Billboard, 4 Nov 2025).
Is Cain Walker AI?
Billboard describes Cain Walker as an AI-assisted country artist whose songs are credited to Dallas Little. “Don’t Tread on Me” debuted at No. 7 on Country Digital Song Sales and reached No. 3 in November 2025 (Billboard, 4 Nov 2025; Billboard, 13 Nov 2025).
Is Solomon Ray AI?
Yes, by its creator’s own account. Christopher Jermaine Townsend, a Mississippi musician who also records as Topher, says he starts from a hook and lyrics, structures the song with ChatGPT and generates it in Suno (WLBT, 3 Dec 2025). Billboard calls Solomon Ray an AI-powered artist; “Find Your Rest” reached No. 18 on Hot Gospel Songs in November 2025 (Billboard, 4 Nov 2025).
Is Vinih Pray real?
By his own account there is a person behind the name, but “A Million Colors” was generated with Suno. Vinih Pray told Billboard in writing that he composes lyrics and melodies and uses Suno to bring them to life because singing is not his strength; his Spotify bio says he was born in Rio de Janeiro. The song reached the TikTok Viral 50 in June 2025 (Billboard, 3 Jun 2025).
Are there AI artists and AI bands on Spotify?
Yes. Several acts in this list built large Spotify audiences: Sienna Rose had almost 3 million monthly listeners in January 2026 (BBC, 17 Jan 2026), the band The Velvet Sundown more than 1.4 million in July 2025 (Berklee, 22 Jul 2025) and Jacub more than 935,000 in January 2026 (Music Business Worldwide, 19 Jan 2026). Spotify said it would mark AI-generated artist identities with an AI Persona badge from mid-September 2026 and keep them out of its recommendations unless you follow them (Spotify, 11 Aug 2026).
Who are the most famous AI singers?
By charts: Xania Monet, the first known AI artist on a Billboard radio chart, the AI country acts Breaking Rust and Cain Walker, and the AI version of “Papaoutai”, with 210.7 million streams in the first half of 2026. By listeners: Sienna Rose and The Velvet Sundown. In 2026, Josh Fawaz’s “Like a Prayer”, which credits AI vocals, led Australian radio for four weeks (Billboard, 4 Nov 2025; Billboard, 13 Nov 2025; Luminate, 15 Jul 2026; ABC News, 17 Jul 2026).
