Phonk AI music prompts
Phonk is dark, lo-fi beat music rooted in 1990s Memphis rap tapes. Its best-known modern form, drift phonk, runs at 120 to 160 BPM (beats per minute) and is built from a heavily distorted cowbell melody, a clipping 808 bass (a booming sub bass pushed into distortion), a hard punchy kick and chopped, pitched-down rap vocal samples. The texture is gritty on purpose.
A prompt should name the tempo, the cowbell melody, the distorted 808, the vocal samples and a loud, saturated mix.

Arrangement
Drift phonk gets to the point. A short intro, often a filtered cowbell riff or a vocal sample, lasts a few bars, then the full beat drops. The main riff repeats with small changes: the drums cut out for a bar, the 808 pattern varies, a second cowbell line answers. Many tracks end within two minutes, which suits short video edits.
Vocals
Phonk rarely has a sung lead. The voice is sample material: short rap phrases like those on 1990s Memphis tapes, pitched down, chopped and repeated, often buried in tape hiss. Ask for chopped, pitched-down rap vocal samples used rhythmically. For none, write: instrumental only, no vocals.
Tips
- Write "distorted cowbell melody", because that one sound identifies drift phonk within a second.
- Describe the 808 as hard, clipping or overdriven, and ask for a punchy, aggressive kick.

Common mistakes
- Asking for a clean, polished mix removes the distortion that gives the genre its menace.
