Lo-fi AI music prompts
Lo-fi hip-hop is slow, instrumental beat music at 60 to 90 BPM (beats per minute), made to sound worn and warm. A soft, dusty drum loop with a lazy swing sits under mellow jazz chords on electric piano, piano or guitar, with a simple bass and deliberate imperfections: vinyl crackle, tape wobble and rolled-off highs. It is background music by design.
A prompt should name the tempo, the drum feel, the chord instrument, the texture (crackle, tape, rain) and a soft, muffled mix.

How to prompt it
Arrangement
Lo-fi tracks are loops with small changes. A few seconds of crackle or a filtered version of the chords opens the track, the drums enter, and the same four or eight bar progression repeats. Variation comes from dropping the drums for a bar, adding a counter-melody or filtering the whole mix. Tracks fade out or stop like a tape being switched off.
Vocals
Lo-fi is almost always instrumental. When a voice appears it is a texture: a hummed line, a short spoken phrase or a chopped, filtered sample sitting low in the mix. Ask for it to be soft, filtered and occasional. For none, which is the usual choice, write: instrumental only, no vocals.
Tips
- Ask for imperfections by name, such as vinyl crackle, tape wobble, soft saturation and rolled-off highs, because they are the sound.
- Describe the drums as soft, dusty and laid-back with a lazy swing, never punchy.
- Name the chord instrument and ask for jazzy seventh or ninth chords to get the mellow harmony.
- Add one ambient layer, such as rain, a cafe murmur or night crickets, for a sense of place.
- Keep the prompt instrumental unless you want a short spoken or hummed texture.
Common mistakes
- Asking for a clean, bright or punchy mix removes the character, and the result is ordinary instrumental hip-hop.
- Going above 90 BPM makes the beat feel busy, which defeats music meant to sit behind work or study.
- Adding a full lead vocal pulls attention to the foreground, the opposite of what the genre is for.
