Contemporary R&B is slow, groove-led music at 60 to 100 BPM (beats per minute), built for the voice. Laid-back drums with crisp snaps or rimshots sit on a deep 808 sub bass (a long, low bass note named after a drum machine), under warm electric piano or pad chords with extended voicings such as ninths and elevenths. The lead vocal is silky and layered with harmonies and ad-libs.
A prompt should name the tempo, drum feel, chord instrument, bass, vocal delivery and a smooth, spacious mix.

How to prompt it
Arrangement
R&B songs follow verse, pre-chorus and chorus, but the changes are subtle. Verses are sparse, with drums, bass and a few chords under the lead. The chorus adds harmonies and thicker pads instead of getting louder. A bridge often strips back to keys and voice, sometimes with a change of key or feel, before a last chorus full of ad-libs.
Vocals
The vocal is the main instrument in R&B. Expect a close, breathy lead, melisma (several notes sung on one syllable), falsetto, stacked harmonies and ad-libs that answer the main line. Ask for the delivery, the layering and where the ad-libs go. Keep the lead upfront and dry enough to feel intimate.
Tips
- Name the chords as well as the instrument, for example "electric piano with minor ninth chords", to get the rich harmony.
- Ask for a laid-back or behind-the-beat drum feel, since stiff timing removes the groove.
- Describe the vocal layers, such as breathy lead, stacked harmonies and ad-libs, because the vocal arrangement defines the genre.
- Choose the era, since a 1990s slow jam, 2000s uptempo, neo-soul and modern trap-soul each have a distinct drum and keyboard sound.
- Use mix words like smooth, warm, spacious and intimate.
Common mistakes
- Asking for high energy turns the track into dance-pop, because the genre works through restraint.
- Skipping the bass description often gives a thin low end, when a deep 808 or a warm bass guitar should anchor the song.
- Requesting a loud belted vocal throughout removes the dynamics, and the intimate verses disappear.
