Tempos range widely, with 120 to 180 BPM (beats per minute) the common middle. Down-tuned, palm-muted rhythm guitars (strings damped with the picking hand for a tight chug) lock with double-kick drums and bass, under harmonised lead guitars and a vocal that may be sung, screamed or growled. A prompt should name the tempo, the sub-style, the guitar tuning and tone, the drum approach, the vocal type and a dense, powerful mix. Instrumental only, no vocals. ## How to prompt it ### Arrangement Metal songs are riff sequences. An intro riff sets the tone, then verse and chorus alternate, with each section built on its own riff. After the second chorus comes the centrepiece: a guitar solo, a breakdown (a slow, heavy half-time section) or an extended instrumental passage. The final chorus returns, often with an added lead guitar harmony, and the song ends on the main riff. ### Vocals Metal vocals range from clean, operatic singing to harsh techniques: screams (high and raspy) and growls (low and guttural). Many modern songs use harsh verses and clean choruses. Be explicit about which you want, the voice type and where each appears, because the model cannot guess. For none, write: instrumental only, no vocals. ### Tips - Name the sub-style, such as thrash, doom, metalcore, power, symphonic or progressive, because the tempo and vocal change completely. - Describe the guitars as down-tuned, high-gain and palm-muted, and mention harmonised leads or a solo. - Specify the drums, for example tight double-kick, galloping rhythm, blast beats or a half-time breakdown. - State the vocal type clearly, whether clean and soaring, harsh screams, low growls or harsh verses with clean choruses. - Ask for a dense, tight, powerful mix with a clear kick drum so the low end stays defined. ### Common mistakes - Writing only "heavy metal" returns a generic mid-tempo track, since the word covers sounds that have little in common. - Forgetting the vocal type often gives a clean rock singer over extreme riffs, or the reverse. - Asking for lots of reverb and warmth blurs the fast palm-muted riffs, which need a dry, tight sound.
