# Jazz AI music prompts

Jazz is improvised music built on swing and rich harmony. A small combo at a medium 110 to 160 BPM (beats per minute) has a walking upright bass (one note per beat, moving through the chords), a ride cymbal playing the swing pattern, lightly played drums, and piano or guitar comping (playing chords rhythmically behind the soloist) under a saxophone or trumpet melody.

A prompt should name the tempo and feel, the line-up, the era or sub-style, the soloing instrument and a natural acoustic room sound.

- Mention extended chords and piano comping for the harmony, and name the instrument that solos.
- Request a natural acoustic room sound and avoid words like punchy or loud.

### Common mistakes

- Writing "smooth jazz" when you want a club combo returns polished background music with a programmed feel.
- Forgetting the word swing often gives straight, stiff eighth notes that do not read as jazz.
- Asking for many soloists in a short track leaves no room for any of them to develop an idea.
