# Hip-hop AI music prompts

Hip-hop is rap over a looped beat. Its classic form, boom bap, runs at 80 to 100 BPM (beats per minute) and is built on a swung drum break with a hard kick and a fat snare on beats two and four, a warm bassline and a chopped sample, usually soul, jazz or funk with vinyl texture. The rap sits on top with clear diction.

A prompt should name the tempo, the drum character, the sample type, the bass, the rap delivery and a gritty, warm mix.

## How to prompt it

### Arrangement

A hip-hop track is a loop that is arranged by muting and unmuting parts. A short intro of 4 to 8 bars sets up the sample, then 16-bar verses alternate with 8-bar hooks. Producers drop the drums out for a bar before a new section, add scratches or a second sample in the hook, and end with the beat riding out or a sudden stop.

### Vocals

Hip-hop vocals are rapped: rhythmic speech locked to the drums, where clear diction and flow (how the syllables sit on the beat) matter more than melody. Hooks are often sung, chanted or scratched from a record. Ask for the delivery, such as laid-back, aggressive or storytelling, and the kind of hook. For a beat only, write: instrumental only, no vocals.

### Tips

- Describe the drums as dusty, swung and hard-hitting, and mention the fat snare, because the drum sound defines boom bap.
- Name the kind of sample you want, such as chopped soul strings, a jazz piano loop or a horn stab, without naming a record.
- Ask for vinyl crackle, tape saturation or a low-pass filtered bassline to get the sampled texture.
- State the rap delivery, for example confident with clear diction, laid-back or aggressive, and ask for a sung or scratched hook.
- For a beat to rap over yourself, ask for an instrumental with space in the midrange.

### Common mistakes

- Asking for hi-hat rolls and sliding 808s gives you trap, which is a different drum language.
- A glossy, bright mix removes the grit, and the beat starts to sound like pop with a rapper on it.
- Packing the beat with melodies leaves no room for the voice, since rap needs a sparse loop under it.
