# Drill AI music prompts

Drill is dark, sparse rap music at 138 to 145 BPM (beats per minute), felt in half-time. Its signature is the sliding 808 (a deep sub bass that glides between notes) under skippy hi-hats grouped in threes, with a snare that lands on beat three in one bar and late, on beat four, in the next. Melodies are cold and minor, on piano, strings or choir.

A prompt should name the tempo, the 808 glides, the drum pattern, the melody instrument, the rap delivery and a heavy, clean sub.

## How to prompt it

### Arrangement

A drill track opens with the melody alone for 4 to 8 bars, often filtered. The drums and 808 drop together, usually under the hook. Verses of 16 bars follow, and producers keep interest by cutting the 808 for half a bar, switching the hi-hat pattern or pausing everything before a punch line. Most songs end after a second hook with little or no outro.

### Vocals

Drill vocals are rapped in a tight, rhythmic, often deadpan style, with short ad-libs between lines and punch lines left exposed when the beat cuts out. Melodic drill adds sung, auto-tuned hooks. Ask for the delivery and the accent or language you want. For a beat only, write: instrumental only, no vocals.

### Tips

- Write "sliding 808 glides", because the pitch slides between bass notes are the most recognisable part of the sound.
- Ask for skippy syncopated hi-hats and offbeat snares so the drums do not default to a trap pattern.
- Keep the melody to one cold, minor-key motif on piano, strings, choir or bells.
- Name the regional flavour, such as UK, New York or Chicago, since each has a different energy and drum feel.
- Describe the rap as tight, punchy and rhythmic, or ask for a melodic sung hook if you want a softer variant.

### Common mistakes

- Using the word trap in the prompt usually pulls the hi-hats and snares back to a standard trap pattern.
- Asking for bright or happy chords removes the tension that the genre depends on.
- Filling every gap with melody leaves no room for the 808 slides, which need space to be heard.
