# Spotify’s AI Persona badge, explained

Updated 5 October 2026, 8 min read, by the Lyro Music team

The AI Persona badge, rolling out on Spotify since mid-September 2026, marks artist profiles whose name and images present a photorealistic AI-generated person who does not exist. Artists can declare it in Spotify for Artists, or Spotify adds a “Likely AI Persona” badge after its own review, which the artist can appeal. Badged artists are left out of editorial and personalised recommendations unless a listener engages with them, for example by following. Making music with AI tools does not, by itself, earn the badge ([Spotify for Artists, AI Persona badges](https://support.spotify.com/us/artists/article/ai-personas/)).

## What the badge is

Spotify announced the badge on 11 Aug 2026, opened self-declaration to artists the same day and said badges would start to appear from mid-September. Its reason: listeners told it they do not like finding out that an artist profile that seems human belongs to an AI-generated persona ([Spotify Newsroom, 11 Aug 2026](https://newsroom.spotify.com/2026-08-11/ai-persona-badges-transparency/)). The badge tells listeners that an artist’s public identity, the name and imagery on the profile, may be AI-generated and does not represent a real person. Spotify draws the line itself: “This badge is about the artist’s public identity, not about how the music was made.”

The badge comes in two versions, and listeners can tap it to see which one applies ([Spotify for Artists, AI Persona badges](https://support.spotify.com/us/artists/article/ai-personas/)):

| What the badge says | What it means | Who set it |
|---|---|---|
| AI Persona | The artist has said that the profile represents an AI Persona | The artist, in Spotify for Artists |
| Likely AI Persona | Spotify has reviewed the profile and identified it as an AI-generated identity | Spotify’s review team |

It appears next to the artist’s name on the profile, in the Artist Badges section of the profile’s About page, next to the name in Search on mobile, and next to the name in track rows in playlists. Spotify says the badges are rolling out gradually in the app, so you may not see them yet ([Spotify for Artists, AI Persona badges](https://support.spotify.com/us/artists/article/ai-personas/)).

## Who gets it, and who does not

Spotify defines an AI Persona as an artist whose public identity represents an AI-generated photorealistic human. A profile can count as one when the artist imagery is itself AI-generated and looks like a real person who does not exist: profile pictures, header images, album artwork or other visuals that represent the artist ([Spotify for Artists, AI Persona badges](https://support.spotify.com/us/artists/article/ai-personas/)).

| Your artist profile shows | AI Persona badge? |
|---|---|
| You, a real person who uses AI tools to make the music | No |
| A stage name, or a fictional character that is not a photorealistic AI-generated person | No |
| A singer who does not exist, shown in photorealistic AI-generated images | Yes. Declare it yourself, or Spotify may apply “Likely AI Persona” |

Besides self-declaration, Spotify reviews the name and imagery of artist profiles. It started with artists who have met defined audience thresholds, so that the labels cover most of the profiles listeners visit ([Spotify for Artists, AI Persona badges](https://support.spotify.com/us/artists/article/ai-personas/); [Spotify Newsroom, 11 Aug 2026](https://newsroom.spotify.com/2026-08-11/ai-persona-badges-transparency/)); its pages do not give the numbers. If you later change your artist name, profile image, bio or other identity details, Spotify may review the profile again ([Spotify for Artists, AI Persona badges](https://support.spotify.com/us/artists/article/ai-personas/)).

## What changes for listeners and for the artist

- **Recommendations.** Music from AI Personas is not included in editorial or personalised recommendations unless a listener intentionally engages with the artist, for example by following them ([Spotify for Artists, AI Persona badges](https://support.spotify.com/us/artists/article/ai-personas/)). Only the listener can choose to follow an artist, so following is an explicit signal, as TechCrunch points out ([TechCrunch, 11 Aug 2026](https://techcrunch.com/2026/08/11/spotify-will-label-ai-persona-profiles-and-exclude-their-music-from-recommendations/)).

- **A label, not a takedown.** Spotify’s pages describe a label and a recommendation rule, not the removal of music: the badge sits next to the artist’s name in Search and in track rows in playlists.

- **Who decided.** Tapping the badge shows listeners whether the artist disclosed it or Spotify made the call after a review ([Spotify Newsroom, 11 Aug 2026](https://newsroom.spotify.com/2026-08-11/ai-persona-badges-transparency/)).

- **No Verified by Spotify badge.** Profiles that appear to primarily represent AI-generated or AI Persona artists are currently not eligible for Verified by Spotify. Artists who use AI tools responsibly can still be verified if they present themselves authentically ([Spotify for Artists, Verified by Spotify](https://support.spotify.com/us/artists/article/verified-by-spotify/)).

- **Money.** Spotify’s pages on the badge say nothing about royalties or payouts. The change they describe is about discovery.

- **Listener reports.** In August Spotify said that in the coming months listeners would be able to report profiles they believe are AI Personas ([Spotify Newsroom, 11 Aug 2026](https://newsroom.spotify.com/2026-08-11/ai-persona-badges-transparency/)). Its help page, read on 5 Oct 2026, does not describe that option yet.

## Can the badge be removed or appealed?

You cannot switch it off yourself, whichever version it is. What you can do depends on how it got there ([Spotify for Artists, AI Persona badges](https://support.spotify.com/us/artists/article/ai-personas/)):

| Situation | What you can do |
|---|---|
| Spotify applied “Likely AI Persona” and it is right | Confirm it by declaring the AI Persona in Spotify for Artists. Your About page then shows “AI Persona” instead of “Likely AI Persona” |
| Spotify applied “Likely AI Persona” by mistake | Appeal. You are notified in Spotify for Artists, and the steps to appeal are there. If you do nothing, the badge stays. Spotify makes the final decision after reviewing the information available |
| You declared it yourself by mistake | Contact Spotify: you cannot remove a self-declared badge in Spotify for Artists |

Spotify’s pages do not say what evidence an appeal needs. They do say what the review looks at: the name and the imagery that represents the artist, including profile and header images and album artwork. That is what to check before you appeal.

To declare the badge yourself, log in to artists.spotify.com, go to Artist Settings, select Profile & Identity, turn on AI Persona and select Update. Only do it if you are sure: you cannot turn it off afterwards ([Spotify for Artists, AI Persona badges](https://support.spotify.com/us/artists/article/ai-personas/)).

## If you make music with AI tools

The badge is about who the artist is, not which tools made the track. If you release under your own name, a stage name or a character that is not a photorealistic AI person, using AI in the music does not make you an AI Persona ([Spotify for Artists, AI Persona badges](https://support.spotify.com/us/artists/article/ai-personas/)). Honest labelling still matters, in three places:

- **AI credits, for how the track was made.** They show which parts of a track were generated with AI, role by role, such as lyrics, vocals, instrumental performances or production; when a person and AI both worked on the same role, you credit them separately. You add them through your distributor when you upload. The feature is in beta, only some distributors support it, and listeners see the credits on mobile, in the song credits and the Now Playing view, not on profiles or as a label on the track. They are optional ([Spotify for Artists, AI credits](https://support.spotify.com/us/artists/article/ai-credits/)). Spotify says disclosure is not meant to punish artists who use AI responsibly or to down-rank their tracks, and that a missing credit does not mean AI was not used ([Spotify Newsroom, 25 Sep 2025](https://newsroom.spotify.com/2025-09-25/spotify-strengthens-ai-protections/)).

- **The AI Persona setting, only if it is true.** If your artist is a photorealistic AI-generated person, declaring it is the honest route, and Spotify has said it will not rely on self-disclosure alone ([Spotify Newsroom, 11 Aug 2026](https://newsroom.spotify.com/2026-08-11/ai-persona-badges-transparency/)).

- **No borrowed voices.** Spotify removes music that impersonates another artist’s voice without permission, whether by AI voice cloning or any other method, after the artist or someone acting for them files a claim. It names certain forms of parody as exceptions ([Spotify for Artists, voice impersonation](https://support.spotify.com/us/artists/article/music-that-impersonates-another-artists-voice/)).

Labelling counts beyond Spotify too. IFPI’s principles for official charts, announced on 30 Jul 2026, include two that apply here: a recording made with generative AI services should be substantially human made, and its use of AI should be appropriately signalled to listeners on streaming services ([IFPI, 30 Jul 2026](https://www.ifpi.org/ifpi-rolls-out-global-principles-for-the-eligibility-of-recordings-developed-using-ai-in-official-music-charts-worldwide/)). Our guide to [AI songs on the charts](https://lyromusic.com/learn/ai-songs-on-the-charts) covers those rules, and [Can you monetise AI music?](https://lyromusic.com/learn/can-you-monetize-ai-music) covers distributors and royalties.

If you make songs on Lyro: every download of generated audio carries an ID3 tag, a machine-readable field inside the file, that declares it AI-generated. Lyro has no voice cloning, and its [acceptable use policy](https://lyromusic.com/legal/acceptable-use) does not allow imitating a real person’s voice without their documented consent or naming a real artist as a style. Your AI credits and the identity on your Spotify profile are still yours to set. If you sing, you can keep your own voice at the centre and [have a beat written around your vocal](https://lyromusic.com/features/add-beat-to-vocals).

## How other platforms label AI music

Each service labels something different: Spotify labels the artist’s identity, Deezer labels the music, and YouTube and TikTok label the post. Each row was read on the platform’s own page on 5 Oct 2026, except where marked.

| Platform | What is labelled | Who sets the label | What else changes | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spotify | Artist profiles with a photorealistic AI-generated identity (AI Persona badge); optional AI credits, role by role, in the song credits | The artist, or Spotify after a review; credits come through the distributor | Badged artists are left out of editorial and personalised recommendations by default | Spotify for Artists, AI Persona badges; Spotify for Artists, AI credits |
| Deezer | Fully AI-generated music, tagged for listeners at album level | Deezer’s own detection tool | Tagged tracks are left out of algorithmic recommendations and editorial playlists; fraudulent streams are not paid; AI tracks used for streaming fraud, and those not streamed for 6 months, are taken down | Deezer, 21 Jul 2026 |
| YouTube | Videos with realistic AI content, including AI-generated music that is the main focus of the video | The creator, with the AI use setting in YouTube Studio; YouTube may add a label itself, for example from C2PA metadata. Music partners declare Fully, Partly or No Gen AI when they deliver | Disclosure does not limit audience or earnings; creators who consistently fail to disclose risk removal of content or suspension from the YouTube Partner Program | YouTube Help, GenAI disclosure; YouTube Help, music partners |
| TikTok | AI-generated content with realistic images, audio or video | The creator, with the AI-generated content setting; TikTok may add an automatic label, for example from C2PA Content Credentials, which cannot be removed | The setting does not affect distribution; unlabelled realistic AI content may be removed | TikTok Support |
| Apple Music | AI transparency tags for Track, Composition, Artwork and Music Video when AI generated a material portion | The label or distributor, in the delivery | The specification marks the tags optional. RouteNote, a distributor, reported that Apple told partners on 20 Aug 2026 that the tags will show to listeners as “Made With AI” labels later in 2026; we found no Apple page that confirms it | Apple Music Specification 5.3.26; RouteNote, 21 Aug 2026 |

## Questions

### Will using an AI music generator get me the AI Persona badge?

Not on its own. Spotify says the badge does not apply if you only use AI tools to make your music while your profile represents a real person, a stage name or a fictional character that is not an AI-generated photorealistic person ([Spotify for Artists, AI Persona badges](https://support.spotify.com/us/artists/article/ai-personas/)). How you used AI belongs in AI credits, which are separate from the badge.

### What does “Likely AI Persona” mean on Spotify?

It is the version Spotify applies after its own review, when it has identified that an artist’s profile represents an AI-generated identity. “AI Persona” without “Likely” means the artist declared it in Spotify for Artists ([Spotify for Artists, AI Persona badges](https://support.spotify.com/us/artists/article/ai-personas/)).

### Can I remove the AI Persona badge from my Spotify profile?

Not yourself. If Spotify applied it and you think it is wrong, you can appeal from Spotify for Artists, and Spotify makes the final decision. If you declared it by mistake, you have to contact Spotify ([Spotify for Artists, AI Persona badges](https://support.spotify.com/us/artists/article/ai-personas/)).

### Does the AI Persona badge affect streams or royalties?

It affects discovery: music from AI Personas is left out of editorial and personalised recommendations unless a listener engages with the artist, for example by following them ([Spotify for Artists, AI Persona badges](https://support.spotify.com/us/artists/article/ai-personas/)). Spotify’s pages on the badge do not mention royalties or payouts.

### How does Spotify decide an artist is an AI Persona?

Artists can declare it, and Spotify also reviews profiles whose name and imagery appear to represent a photorealistic AI-generated person, starting with artists above defined audience thresholds ([Spotify Newsroom, 11 Aug 2026](https://newsroom.spotify.com/2026-08-11/ai-persona-badges-transparency/)). Spotify has said listeners will be able to report profiles to its review team in the coming months.

### Is the AI Persona badge the same as AI credits?

No. The badge is about the artist’s identity and shows on the profile and next to the artist’s name. AI credits describe how a track was made, role by role, and show in the song credits on mobile. Spotify keeps them separate ([Spotify for Artists, AI Persona badges](https://support.spotify.com/us/artists/article/ai-personas/); [Spotify for Artists, AI credits](https://support.spotify.com/us/artists/article/ai-credits/)).
