# How producers get vocals on their beats when they can’t sing

Updated 10 October 2026, 9 min read, by the Lyro Music team

Producers who can’t sing get vocals in six main ways: a marketplace acapella, a bought or commissioned topline, a collaboration with an artist, a session singer, their own voice with pitch correction or a voice-changing plugin, or an AI vocal generated on their own beat. They differ in cost per song, in how well the vocal fits the beat, and in who owns the result. Prices below were read on 10 Oct 2026.

## The six routes side by side

Everything here was read on the seller’s own page on 10 Oct 2026. A price is what a seller asks, not a promise of what you will pay, and “from” means the lowest one listed. A [topline](https://lyromusic.com/glossary#topline) is the vocal melody, and usually the words, written and recorded over an instrumental.

| Route | What you get | What it costs | Fit to your beat | Who owns it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. A marketplace acapella | A recorded vocal, often with dry stems, made for no one in particular | Voqlr lists royalty-free vocals from $9.95 with a commercial licence | Listings are tagged with a tempo and a key, so you search for a match, then warp and re-pitch it | You buy a licence. Check whether it is exclusive: a listing sold to many producers is not |
| 2. A bought or commissioned topline | A melody and words recorded by a singer over an instrumental | Prime Vocals says non-exclusive toplines often sell for about $40 to $50, exclusive ones for 3 to 10 times that, and custom ones written to a brief for about $150 to $300 or more. Paul Hawksworth Vocals listed £29.99 and £399 toplines. ToplineBase shows an average of €850 | A ready-made topline is tagged by tempo and key. A custom one is written to your track | Exclusive or not, and often a split. ToplineBase says every deal starts with a 50/50 master and publishing split |
| 3. An artist on the track | A singer or rapper who hears the beat and writes to it | No standard price: a fee, a split, or both | The best, because a writer is hearing your track | Whatever you sign. Prime Vocals advises agreeing any writing or publishing share in writing before release |
| 4. A session singer | A paid performance of words and a melody you supply | Chartlex gives $100 to $500 per track for a lead or feature vocalist, $50 to $150 an hour, and higher for named artists. US union scale for a solo singer on a recording is $316 per hour or per side (a track up to 4 minutes 30 seconds), from 1 Jan 2026 (LA Singers) | Good: a professional reads your beat and your words, and you can ask for another take | Set by your contract with the singer |
| 5. Your own voice, transformed | Your performance, run through pitch correction or a voice-changing plugin | A plugin or subscription. We did not read a price | Yours: the plugin keeps your timing and phrasing. Sonarworks says you can hum or speak the lyrics as input | You wrote and performed it. The plugin’s licence terms apply |
| 6. An AI vocal on your beat | A new vocal singing your words, returned as its own track (Lyro’s vocals on your beat) | 7 credits for up to a minute of beat, 11 credits for three minutes. Starter is $14 a month for 80 credits. No free plan | Sung while the model listens to your beat, so it lands on your grid | A commercial licence on every paid plan. It is AI output, so we do not promise it is exclusive or protected by copyright |

Routes 1 and 2 give you a human performance you did not commission. Routes 3 and 4 give you a person who will take notes. Route 5 keeps the song yours but still asks you to carry a tune. Route 6 is the quickest way to hear a vocal on your own beat, and the one that is not a human singer.

## What ten beats cost, route by route

Say you have 10 beats and want a vocal on each. This is the same job priced six ways, using the figures above. It is arithmetic on asking prices, not a quote.

| Route | One beat | 10 beats |
|---|---|---|
| Marketplace acapella | from $9.95 | from $99.50 |
| Non-exclusive topline | about $40 to $50 | about $400 to $500 |
| Custom topline | about $150 to $300 or more | about $1,500 to $3,000 or more |
| Session singer, lead vocal | $100 to $500 | $1,000 to $5,000 |
| Union scale, solo singer | $316 a side | $3,160 |
| AI vocal on your beat, up to a minute each | 7 credits | 70 credits, which is inside one month of Starter’s 80 credits |

Read the last row with care. It prices a vocal sketch: the melody is the model’s, and it differs on every take. It is not the same job as a singer’s finished performance. 80 credits buy 11 one-minute vocals if every job works first time, but plan on two or three tries for a take you keep, which is why many producers upload only the chorus bars. A failed job gives its credits back.

The sum also shows who each route suits. If a beat sells for little, a $100 vocal on it rarely pays back, and a $9.95 acapella costs you time to warp and re-pitch instead of money. For the singer side of the sum, see [how much it costs to hire a singer](https://lyromusic.com/learn/how-much-does-it-cost-to-hire-a-singer).

## Which route fits which job

| If you want to | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Release a track with a human voice you can name | An artist (3) or a session singer (4) | A person, a contract and a credit. This is what the AI route does not give you |
| Add a ready vocal to a house or EDM drop quickly | An acapella (1) or an exclusive topline (2) | Cheap and fast if you can find one that matches your tempo and key. An AI acapella made for your track skips the warping, but it is AI-made |
| Show buyers what a beat could become, and still deliver the instrumental clean | An AI hook or demo vocal (6) | It costs little to test. Put a sung hook on the chorus and leave the verses open. See demo vocals for beats you sell |
| Hear whether a song works before paying anyone | An AI vocal (6), then a singer (4) | You hear the words and structure on your beat first. See a song demo without singing |
| Find a melody when you are stuck | A topline idea (6 or 2) | Lyro can improvise a topline over your beat; a purchased topline is a finished one. See how to write a topline |
| Keep a melody you already have in your head | Your own voice (5), or a singer you guide (4) | An AI vocal cannot copy a melody note for note. A plugin keeps yours |
| Get a vocal when you have a beat but no lyrics either | Words first, then any route | Every route needs words. Lyro’s lyric writer plans lines to fit your beat before they are sung |

You can mix routes. A common order is an AI vocal to test the idea, a topline or a singer to finish it, and your own mix at the end.

## The AI route, and where it stops

Here is what happens when you use Lyro for route 6, so you can judge it against the others.

- **Upload your beat.** Lyro reads its tempo and key in your browser. If a 140 BPM trap beat reads as 70, correct it. The free [BPM and key finder](https://lyromusic.com/tools/bpm-key-finder) checks them first.

- **Paste your lyrics, or let Lyro write some.** The vocal model sings exactly the words it is given. Unsure how many lines fit? The lyric writer sizes them to your beat.

- **Choose a voice type and wait.** A vocal usually takes two to three minutes. It comes back as a track of its own, and your beat file is never changed.

- **Mix.** Balance it in the studio, nudge a word that lands early or late, and master. See [AI vocals off beat?](https://lyromusic.com/features/vocals-off-beat) if something sits wrong.

Where it stops:

- The melody is the model’s, and a new one on every take. You cannot hum a tune and have it copied.

- You pick a voice type, not a singer. There is no voice cloning and no naming a real artist as a style.

- It sings what you give it. With only a few lines it adds lines of its own, so write a full verse and chorus to hear only your words.

- No harmonies, doubles or ad-libs are stacked for you. A marketplace vocal can come with them ([Voqlr](https://www.voqlr.com/) says its full vocals include doubles, harmonies and ad libs); here you add your own on extra tracks.

- No MIDI and no sheet music. You get audio.

- AI voices can mispronounce words. Respell a name or slang word the way it sounds and run it again.

- Lyro has no free plan. Starter is $14 a month.

If your goal is a release that credits a real singer, use this route as a guide to send them, not as the final vocal. ## Who owns the vocal

- **Marketplace vocals and toplines.** You buy a licence, not the singer’s voice. Non-exclusive means other producers can buy the same vocal; exclusive means the seller stops selling it. [Paul Hawksworth Vocals](https://paulhawksworth.com/) describes its exclusive toplines as sold to a single producer and its non-exclusive ones as licensed to multiple producers.

- **Splits.** A topline is a co-write. [ToplineBase](https://www.toplinebase.com/lp/producers) says every deal on its marketplace starts with a 50/50 master and publishing split, with buyouts offered. Ask what you are getting before you pay.

- **Artists and session singers.** The contract decides. Agree any writing or publishing share in writing before release.

- **Your own voice.** You wrote and performed it. Read the plugin’s licence for anything made with its voices.

- **AI vocals.** As between you and Lyro, you own whatever rights exist in the result, and every paid plan includes a commercial licence. Downloads carry an ID3 tag declaring them AI-generated. We do not promise AI audio is exclusive or protected by copyright, so do not sell it as either. See [music rights](https://lyromusic.com/legal/music-rights), [AI music copyright by country](https://lyromusic.com/learn/ai-music-copyright-by-country) and [selling beats with AI vocals](https://lyromusic.com/learn/selling-beats-with-ai-vocals).

Whichever route you take, you need the rights to the beat itself, samples and loops included. If you leased the beat, your lease decides what you may release.

## Before you pay anyone: a checklist

- **Know your tempo and key.** Most sample and topline listings are tagged with both. A half or double tempo reading is the usual mistake.

- **Decide the job.** A demo to test the song, a clip to send a rapper, or a vocal for release are three different budgets.

- **Decide how much of the beat carries a vocal.** Many producers put a hook on the chorus bars and leave the verses open.

- **Preview against your own beat.** Drop the preview on your track at your tempo before you pay, not in the seller’s player.

- **Ask for the dry vocal.** A dry stem gives you room to add your own reverb and effects. [Voqlr](https://www.voqlr.com/) says its vocals come with dry stems.

- **Get the licence, the exclusivity and any split in writing.**

- **Say what it is.** If part of the track is AI-made, tell buyers, platforms and distributors when they ask.

## Questions

### How do producers get vocals for their beats?

In six main ways: a marketplace acapella, a bought or commissioned topline, a collaboration with an artist, a session singer, their own voice run through pitch correction or a voice-changing plugin, or an AI vocal generated on their beat. A lead vocal booked online is about $100 to $500 per track by one 2026 rate guide ([Chartlex](https://www.chartlex.com/blog/money/how-to-price-music-services-rates-2026)), while royalty-free marketplace vocals start at $9.95 ([Voqlr](https://www.voqlr.com/)).

### Where can I find singers to sing over my instrumentals?

Vocal and topline marketplaces such as [Voqlr](https://www.voqlr.com/), [Prime Vocals](https://primevocals.com/blogs/news/topline-writing-101-how-to-write-pitch-and-sell-toplines-to-producers) and [ToplineBase](https://www.toplinebase.com/lp/producers) sell ready-made vocals and toplines, and a custom topline is written to your track for about $150 to $300 or more by Prime Vocals’ guide. For a person who writes to your beat, message artists directly and agree the fee or the split in writing. For a first idea without a singer, [add an AI vocal to your beat](https://lyromusic.com/features/add-vocals-to-beat).

### How can I make a song if I can’t sing?

Write the words and let someone else, or something else, sing them. A session singer, a bought topline or an artist gives you a human performance. A voice-changing plugin turns your own hummed or spoken take into a vocal while keeping your phrasing ([Sonarworks](https://www.sonarworks.com/blog/learn/what-if-i-cant-sing-but-need-vocals-for-my-track)). Or upload your beat to Lyro and have your lyrics sung on it, from 7 credits.

### Can AI put vocals on my beat?

Yes. Lyro’s vocal model listens to your beat, sings the words you give it on the beat’s grid and returns the vocal alone, so your beat file is never changed. The melody is the model’s and new on every take, you choose a voice type, not a singer, and there is no free plan. See [add AI vocals to your beat](https://lyromusic.com/features/add-vocals-to-beat).

### Is it cheaper to hire a singer or use an AI vocal?

An AI vocal costs 7 credits for up to a minute of beat on a plan that starts at $14 a month, against $100 to $500 for a lead vocal booked online ([Chartlex](https://www.chartlex.com/blog/money/how-to-price-music-services-rates-2026)). They are not the same job: the AI vocal is a sketch with the model’s own melody, and a singer is a performance you can direct. Many producers test with the first and hire for the release. More in [how much it costs to hire a singer](https://lyromusic.com/learn/how-much-does-it-cost-to-hire-a-singer).

### Can I sell or lease a beat that has an AI vocal on it?

You can if the store or distributor allows AI audio, so check its rules. Say the vocal is AI-made, keep the ID3 tag, and do not sell it as exclusive or copyrighted, since Lyro promises neither for AI output. Every paid plan includes a commercial licence. See [selling beats with AI vocals](https://lyromusic.com/learn/selling-beats-with-ai-vocals).

### Do I own the vocal I buy from a marketplace?

You own a licence, and its terms decide what you may do. Non-exclusive vocals can be sold to other producers, and exclusive ones are sold to a single producer ([Paul Hawksworth Vocals](https://paulhawksworth.com/)). Some topline deals also split the master and publishing: ToplineBase says each deal starts at 50/50 ([ToplineBase](https://www.toplinebase.com/lp/producers)). Read the licence and any split before you pay.
