# Apps and AI tools to add a beat to your vocals (2026)

Updated 10 October 2026, 7 min read, by the Lyro Music team

Two kinds of tool add a beat to a vocal. Free studios such as BandLab and GarageBand, and phone apps such as Voloco, let you put loops or a ready beat under your voice, but you match the tempo and line it up yourself. AI tools listen to your recording and write music around it: Suno’s Add Instrumental on paid plans, Vocuno, AIMakeSong, Melodusk, and Lyro Music on every plan.

A clean, dry vocal with no music bleeding into it gives every one of them the best chance. If you want to keep working on the result, choose a tool that hands your vocal back on its own track.

## The tools side by side

| Tool | What it says it does | Limits it states | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Suno, Add Instrumental | Upload voice recordings or vocal stems and add Suno-made instrumentals, announced alongside Add Vocals | Uploads of up to 30 minutes on paid plans, 8 on Free; the add features belong to the paid plans | Music Ally; Suno |
| Vocuno, Add Instrumental | Matches a new instrumental to your vocal’s key and tempo, then mixes the two into a finished song | Works best with clean, monophonic takes: a cappellas, voice memos, demos or separated vocals | Vocuno |
| AIMakeSong | Adds drums, harmony and arrangement around an a cappella, rap or spoken-word vocal without replacing the voice | MP3 or WAV, up to 50 MB and 4 minutes | AIMakeSong |
| Melodusk | Detects your vocal’s key, tempo and rhythm and generates instrumental backing; works with lead vocals, backing vocals and harmonies | MP3, WAV, FLAC and other common formats, up to 8 minutes; Lite plan or higher, not the free tier | Melodusk |
| Lyro Music | Detects the tempo and key of your voice in the browser, then Lyro’s studio tools write drums, bass and other parts that follow your phrasing | Every plan, from $14 a month; one credit per started minute, minimum 5; the new instruments come back as their own track, and your vocal stays untouched on its own track in the mixer | Lyro Music, a beat for your vocal |

We list tools whose own pages we could read on 22 Sep 2026. We have not compared how they sound.

## Free studios and apps: you put the beat under it yourself

These do not write music to your vocal. They give you loops, drummers or ready beats, and you set the tempo and line them up. Read on 10 Oct 2026.

| Tool | What it gives you | What you do yourself | Price as listed | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BandLab | A browser and phone studio you can import a vocal into; loops; SongStarter ideas from a genre, mood, tempo and key you pick. Members can turn a melody into MIDI and have Smart Tools add chords, bass and drums | Set the project to your vocal’s tempo and key, add the parts and line them up. SongStarter does not take your recording | Free; Pro membership $14.99 a month | BandLab Help Center: SongStarter, Smart Tools, membership |
| GarageBand | Thousands of loops and Drummer, a virtual session drummer that takes your direction and plays along with your song; Live Loops on iPhone and iPad | Record or bring in the vocal, choose loops, direct the drummer, line it all up | Free on the App Store (Mac, iPhone, iPad) | Apple, GarageBand for Mac; App Store, iPhone and iPad |
| Voloco | A phone studio built for singing or rapping over beats: a free beat library including BeatStars, your own beats imported free, and key detection on the beat so your voice stays in tune | Pick a beat and record a new take over it; it is made for recording, not for an existing vocal | Free with in-app purchases; All Access from $11.99 a month or $59.99 a year | App Store, Voloco |

If your vocal is already recorded and you do not want to arrange anything, an AI tool from the table above is the closer fit. What BandLab can and cannot do with a vocal is covered in [can BandLab make a beat for your vocal](https://lyromusic.com/learn/can-bandlab-make-a-beat-for-your-vocal).

## How to record a vocal that works

- **Dry and close.** Record in a small, soft room, 15 to 20 cm from the microphone. Reverb in the recording blurs the timing the tool has to read.

- **No music in the background.** Sing over headphones, not speakers, or the old backing leaks into the take.

- **Keep a steady tempo.** Singing to a click track, even a phone metronome, makes the tempo easy to detect. You can check it with the [BPM and key finder](https://lyromusic.com/tools/bpm-key-finder).

- **Start near the first word.** Trim long silence at the start so the tool does not guess the downbeat from noise.

## What to write in the prompt

The vocal fixes the tempo and key, so the prompt only has to describe the music: genre, drums, bass and one lead sound. For example: “Afrobeats, 104 BPM, log drum bass, shakers and congas, warm electric piano, spacious mix”. Leave out vocal words; you already have the vocal. Genre pages such as [afrobeats](https://lyromusic.com/prompts/afrobeats), [trap](https://lyromusic.com/prompts/trap) and [acoustic folk](https://lyromusic.com/prompts/acoustic-folk) list eight prompts each.

## Which one to pick

- **Free, and happy to arrange it yourself:** BandLab or GarageBand.

- **You want to sing or rap a new take over a ready beat on your phone:** Voloco.

- **A quick sketch from a voice memo:** Vocuno, AIMakeSong or Melodusk.

- **You already pay for Suno:** Add Instrumental is in your plan.

- **You want to mix and master the result:** Lyro Music keeps your vocal on its own track, with a mixer, vocal tools and mastering in the same studio.

## Questions

### Can AI make a beat for my vocals?

Yes. Suno (Add Instrumental), Vocuno, AIMakeSong, Melodusk and Lyro Music all take an uploaded vocal and generate music behind it, following the tempo and key of your voice.

### Is there a free app to add a beat to my vocals?

Yes, if you line it up yourself. BandLab and GarageBand are free: import the vocal, set the tempo, and add loops or a beat under it. The tools that write music around your vocal mostly charge: Suno’s Add Instrumental is on paid plans, and Lyro Music has no free plan.

### Can BandLab make a beat for my vocal?

Not from the recording itself. SongStarter starts from a genre, mood, tempo and key you choose. Members can turn the sung melody into MIDI and use Smart Tools to add chords, bass and drums. See [can BandLab make a beat for your vocal](https://lyromusic.com/learn/can-bandlab-make-a-beat-for-your-vocal).

### Do I need a cappella or can I use a voice memo?

A voice memo works if it is clean. Vocuno names voice memos and demos as suitable. Background music or a noisy room makes the tempo harder to read.

### How long can my vocal be?

AIMakeSong accepts up to 4 minutes, Melodusk up to 8, Suno takes uploads up to 30 minutes on paid plans, and Lyro Music makes tracks of 30 seconds to 3 minutes.

### Will my voice be changed?

The tools listed here keep your recorded voice and add music behind it. Lyro Music returns your original vocal on its own track, so it is not processed unless you add effects.

### Can I choose the genre of the beat?

Yes, with a prompt. Name the genre, drums, bass and one lead sound, and leave out vocal words.

### Who owns the song?

Your vocal is yours. Rights to the generated music depend on each tool’s plan; Lyro Music grants commercial use on every plan. See [who owns AI-generated music](https://lyromusic.com/learn/who-owns-ai-generated-music).
