# AI vocal out of key with your beat? How to fix it

An AI vocal sounds out of key with your beat when it was given the wrong key, or when the model missed the key it was given. Key detection is an estimate: it can land on the relative key, such as A minor for a beat in C major, or on another key when the beat is sparse. Check the key before you generate and type the right one if you know it. If a finished vocal sits a semitone or two away from the beat all the way through, shift its pitch in the studio; if it clashes in a less even way, correct the key and generate again. In Lyro the key is read in your browser, you can change it before you generate, and the vocal comes back as its own track, so your beat is never changed.

**Drop your beat to read its key** WAV, MP3, FLAC, M4A or OGG, up to 60 MB. Tempo and key are read in your browser; nothing is uploaded until you sign up.

Lyro works on the first 60 seconds of your beat for $1, once. Not a subscription.

## How it goesThree steps

- **Check the key reading** Lyro reads your beat’s key in the browser. If you made the beat, use the key from your project. The relative key, such as A minor for C major, is the most common misreading.
- **Correct it and generate** Type the right key and tempo, add your lyrics and generate. Lyro asks the model for exactly that key.
- **Shift or regenerate** If the whole vocal is a semitone or two off, shift its pitch in the studio. If it clashes unevenly, generate again rather than forcing it.

## The details

### Three ways a vocal can be out of key

| What went wrong | What you hear | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Relative key | Few wrong notes, but the melody settles on a note that does not feel like home, so lines sound unfinished | Correct the key and generate again. Pitch shift does not help: the notes already belong to your beat’s scale. |
| A different key | Notes clash with the chords, and the vocal sounds sour for whole lines | If every note is off by the same distance, shift the vocal by that many semitones. Otherwise correct the key and generate again. |
| One phrase | A single sour spot in an otherwise good take | Lyro does not tune single notes. Mute or cut that phrase in the studio, or generate again. |

A [key](https://lyromusic.com/glossary#key) is the set of notes a song uses and the note it feels at home on. A major key and its relative minor, such as C major and A minor, share the same seven notes and differ only in that home note, which is why detection mixes them up.

### How to find your beat’s key

- If you made the beat, the key is the one you wrote it in. Use that.

- A leased beat often lists its key on the store page or in the file name.

- Read any file with the [BPM and key finder](https://lyromusic.com/tools/bpm-key-finder), in your browser. Treat the answer as a strong guess and keep its relative in mind: C major and A minor, G major and E minor, F major and D minor.

- Listen to the bass: the note a loop keeps coming back to, and sounds finished on, is usually the home note.

### What pitch shift can and cannot do

Pitch shift in the studio moves every note of a clip by the same number of semitones, up to 12 either way. It fixes a vocal that is right in shape but sits in the wrong place, such as a whole take a semitone flat. It cannot fix a vocal in the relative key, because those notes already fit, and it cannot fix one wrong note. Large shifts also change the character of a voice, so beyond two or three semitones a new generation in the right key usually sounds more natural. Pitch shift runs in your browser and uses no credits.

### The same check for a beat under your vocal

When Lyro writes a beat around your vocal, the key it reads from your voice sets the chords. A voice on its own gives the detection less to go on than a full beat, so check the reading closely and type the key you sang in if you know it. If the chords fight your melody, correct the key and generate again, at one credit per started minute with a minimum of 2 credits. See [add a beat to your vocals](https://lyromusic.com/features/add-beat-to-vocals).

### Where the limits are

- Lyro has no note-by-note pitch correction. The studio shifts whole clips.

- The model is asked for your key, and it can still miss it. Each new generation costs credits.

- Beats that change key, use unusual scales or are heavily detuned are hard to describe with one key.

- If the vocal is in tune but out of time, the cause is the tempo, not the key: see [AI vocals off beat?](https://lyromusic.com/features/vocals-off-beat)

### Credits and plans

A vocal with your lyrics over your beat costs, on Lyro High, 7 credits for a beat of up to a minute and 11 credits for three minutes: the performance plus the stem separation. Pitch shift, mixing and mastering in the studio use no credits. Bringing your own beat and the studio are on every plan, from $9 a month for 20 credits. A new account can try it once for $1, without a subscription, on the first 60 seconds of its own file. Credits for a failed generation come back automatically.

## Questions

### Why is my AI vocal out of key with my beat?

Usually because the key it was given was wrong. Key detection can land on the relative key, such as A minor for C major, or on another key when the beat is sparse. Sometimes the model misses the key it was asked for. Check the key before you generate, and generate again with the right one.

### Can Lyro pitch-correct the vocal note by note?

No. The studio can shift a whole clip up or down by semitones, which fixes a take that is evenly off, but Lyro has no note-by-note pitch correction. For a vocal that clashes unevenly, correct the key and generate again.

### What is a relative key?

Every major key has a relative minor that uses the same seven notes: C major and A minor, G major and E minor, F major and D minor. They differ in the note that feels like home. Because the notes are the same, key detection often confuses the two.

### Should I shift the vocal or my beat?

Shift the vocal and leave your beat as it is. Small shifts of one or two semitones usually sound natural; for bigger gaps, generate the vocal again in the right key.

### What does it cost to try again?

On Lyro High, 7 credits for a vocal over a beat of up to a minute. Pitch shift in the studio uses no credits. Starter is $9 a month for 20 credits. See the [pricing](https://lyromusic.com/pricing) page.
